SUBSTUDIO is a design firm founded in 2015 by Ingrid A. Schmidt and Hannah Dewhirst during their studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Both are now Assistant Professors at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interiors based in Lexington, Kentucky. With backgrounds in architecture, the partners create immersive, sensorial environments that engage body, context, and culture.
A key area of expertise is custom textiles and rugs. SUBSTUDIO has designed and installed over 3,500 square feet of tufted rugs for international fashion houses including Bottega Veneta and Burberry, alongside commissions for exhibitions and cultural spaces across the U.S. Their projects specialize in color, material, texture, and pattern—often realized as dimensional textiles for floors and walls—while always considering circulation, sightlines, spatial dynamics, and lifecycle of the work.
