SUBSTUDIO is a design firm founded in 2015 by Ingrid A. Schmidt and Hannah Dewhirst. &#38;nbsp;The partners began their collaboration during their graduate studies at Cranbrook Academy of Art and now serve as Assistant Professors at the University of Kentucky’s College of Design in Lexington. Grounded in spatial design, they craft immersive, sensorial environments that engage the body and recalibrate perception. Their built work and pedagogy foreground the soft elements of space—light, color, pattern, texture, and atmosphere.


A core area of expertise lies in custom rugs and wallcoverings. SUBSTUDIO has designed and installed more than 3,500 square feet of tufted rugs for international fashion houses such as Bottega Veneta and Burberry, as well as for exhibitions and cultural institutions across the United States. 
Their bespoke surfaces explore the expressive and technical limits of the medium, often invoking optical play and spatial illusion. Through this material-driven approach, SUBSTUDIO seeks to expand how surfaces shape experience. Ultimately, their work invites viewers to slow down, look more closely, and inhabit space with renewed curiosity.&#38;nbsp;

Our wide range of fabrication tools and partners allow for us to test and tune materials in immersive environments at many scales. Through custom textile work, CNC milling, lasercutting, immersive water features, we have realized projects at many scales; pop-up retail spaces, immersive events, art exhibitions, music festival stages, and more.

FABRICATION PARTNER
Since 2021, SUBSTUDIO has partnered with Stitch Rugs, a Casablanca-based studio operated by third-generation rug artisans. Together, we merge advanced robotic tufting with traditional handcraft to produce precision-made, high-quality rugs. Each piece is robotically tufted for accuracy and hand-finished for quality control. Pile height gradation is digitally programmed and integrated directly into the design files, ensuring both technical precision and aesthetic depth.

VARIATION AND TOLERANCE
All specifications adhere to standard manufacturing tolerances. Minor variations may occur between the listed and final product specifications. Yarn colors may vary by approximately ±5%, and overall rug dimensions by ±2%. Please note that color may appear differently across digital displays; we recommend ordering a sample for precise color matching.

MAINTENANCE AND CARE
New rugs may shed during the first three months as excess, non-structural fibers release through normal use. Vacuuming twice weekly during this period will help minimize shedding, which will subside with proper maintenance. Rugs exposed to direct sunlight should be rotated every six months to prevent uneven fading. Spot clean any spills immediately, and allow rugs to relax naturally after unrolling; a gentle application of heat can expedite this process if desired.

SUSTAINABILITY
SUBSTUDIO values sustainability at every stage of design and production. Our rugs are crafted from responsibly sourced materials that balance durability, performance, and environmental impact. Each rug is designed for longevity rather than single use, reinforcing our commitment to eco-centric design.
100% New Zealand Wool – A premium, sustainable fiber with excellent color retention and durability, ideal for high-traffic areas.
Recycled Nylon (Econyl®, supplied by Aquafil) – A resilient, sustainable material made from regenerated nylon waste, featuring a lustrous finish and strong color performance.
Art(ificial) Silk (Tencel®, supplied by Lenzing) – A high-shine fiber with a predetermined color palette. While less suitable for heavy-traffic areas, performance can be enhanced through hybrid tufting with wool.

CUSTOM RUG DESIGNS
SUBSTUDIO offers exclusive custom rug design services to trade professionals. Our team works collaboratively with clients to create distinctive, project-specific pieces. Pricing is determined by project scope and complexity.&#38;nbsp;SUBSTUDIO produces only original designs. While we welcome integration of client branding or visual references, we do not fabricate rugs based solely on external concepts.

LEAD TIMES
Typical lead times for custom projects are approximately 14–16 weeks from final design approval. Design development timelines may vary and are evaluated on a per-project basis. Rugs under 10’ wide can ship via FedEx which has more predictable timelines than larger or more complex packages that require a courier. Care should be taken in the project planning to account for any potential shipping and customs delays.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS
Custom rugs can be produced and delivered internationally. All international shipments must be sent to a verified business address.


DESIGN CONSTRAINTS
Yarn is batch-dyed to match each project’s specifications. Our extensive color library includes hundreds of shades, but for the most accurate color calibration, we recommend sending a physical material sample to our fabrication partner. A color strike-off is strongly advised for final approval and may extend lead times. Maximum rug dimensions are 14 feet wide by 29 feet long.
